Product Description Four famed '60s radicals are gunned down at long range by a sniper. Under enormous media scrutiny, the FBI quickly concludes that Marine war hero Carl Hitchcock, whose ninety-three kills were considered the leading body count tally among American marksman in Vietnam, was the shooter. But as the Bureau, led by Special Agent Nick Memphis, bears down, Hitchcock commits suicide. In closing out the investigation, Nick discovers a case made in heaven: everything fits, from timeline, ballistics, and forensics to motive, means, and opportunity. Maybe it's a little too perfect.Nick asks his friend, the retired Marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger, to examine the data. Using a skill set no other man on earth possesses, Swagger soon discovers unseen anomalies and gradually begins to unravel a sophisticated conspiracy -- one that would require the highest level of warcraft by the most superb special operations professionals. As Swagger penetrates the deepest secrets of the sniper world and its new technology, Nick stands firm in the face of hardball PR initiatives and an inflamed media calling for his ouster. Swagger soon closes in, and those responsible will stop at nothing to take him out. But these heavily armed men make the mistake of thinking they are hunting Bob, when he is, in fact, hunting them. I, Sniper will satisfy Stephen Hunter's legions of fans and win him droves of new ones with its signature blend of brilliant plotting, vivid characters, razor-sharp dialogue, and extraordinary gunfights. And when Swagger and the last of his antagonists finally face each other, reenacting a classic ritual of arms, it is clear that at times there's nothing more necessary than a good man with a gun and the guts to use it.

Good if read in one unthinking gulp September 1, 2010 W. Speers (USA) This book, like Stephen Hunter's other books, is well-written. But after you've read it, you begin thinking things like, how did Anto guess where Bob Lee was going to go? What made him think he beat Bob Lee to the place? How did Bob Lee plan his waterboarding sojourn with Anto and the guys? How did the "Arizona Ranger" beat "Texas Red" with months of training on his handgun to the draw with a revolver he'd just bought? Where did Chuck come from at the climactic shootout? How did T.T. happen to be at the bank way back when? Questions like that detract from the enjoyment of a well-written potboiler.
And I kept laughing at the "Constable" and "Turner" thing. That was funny. I did like it when Hunter discussed movie violence a la "knocking someone out" and "shooting the gun out of his hand" with scenarios that were more like real life. The "ur-text" of Chapter 55 that he mentions in the Acknowledgements of Marty Robbins' "Big Iron" was a bit overdone.
There was a somewhat lengthy discussion of the shape of the trigger guards on the Winchester Model 70 and the Remington Model 700 that I thought was a bit, I don't know, windy, overdrawn, excessive, contrived, something like that. My thought was, "Really?" I even looked the two rifles up on the Net to see for myself. My answer was "I suppose so."
Sadly, Hunter does not resolve the great debate of .30-06 vs. .308 authoritatively. And what about us budding .270 fans?
I Sniper August 4, 2010 Buggs (Wadsworth, Ohio) This book is more in line with the long ago "Bob Lee" books, which i prefer to some of there more recent books. I found this a more enjoyable read.
Slow read. Not the best Swagger Novel August 4, 2010 Sempersmak I am a big fan of the entire Swagger series. Personally, I like the Earl Swagger books over the Bob Lee books, but I'm still a fan. I even liked "47th Samurai" and "Night of Thunder". However, this book was hard to get into. The gun talk would lose me because I didn't care, and it didn't move the story along. I was happy for the inclusion of Nick Memphis, but his character was a departure from the Memphis I'm used to. If your a fan of the series, then this book is a must, but if you are new to the series, I recommend starting with another novel.
Unbelievably bad August 2, 2010 Bookworm (Atlanta, GA) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
When I read Point of Impact I had my suspicions - now I'm convinced. Hunter is a fake, a poser, a pathetically bad writer, and an all round jerk. This is possibly the worst book I have ever read.

My husband was pleased with this book. He normally does not read but he finished this book in one day.
