| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Aside from the ubiquitous presence of a Fatboy Slim track ("Praise You") and the Verve's yesteryear anthem of choice, "Bittersweet Symphony," the cuts on this teensploitation-influenced compilation are hardly cut-out bin oatmeal. Fans restless to sample fresh Blur material will bask in the moody glow of "Coffee & TV," while other tracks offer some lesser-known but tasty dance-floor modernists such as Faithless and Kristen Barry. This is after-hours room service of taunting rock and acerbic ballads, and it highly complements the film's at-odds crew of mean-spirited teen sirens and endangered Cinderella figures, all of whom would rather watch the beautiful people than join their rat race. --Kristy Ojala

Was soooo upset December 17, 2009 Heather Miracle (Reynoldsburg, Oh usa) I was sent the real cd case, and it had a stupid cd inside instead of what I ordered.
Secretly... October 27, 2009 Felicia Jones-Martell (Atlanta, GA) I absolutely love this cd. Secretly is one of my favorite tracks. I told someone about the cd and he begged to borrow and promised to return it. 8 years later, here I am on Amazon still searching for it! you can't even buy it in stores anymore. I can't wait to put my order in!
I've been listening to this for ten years and it's still going strong! September 14, 2009 K.T. May (New York) Want a soundtrack where every song on it will blow you away with catchiness, lyrical prowess and hard-hitting beats? Then you should definitely consider picking up the "Cruel Intentions" soundtrack, especially if you've seen the film.
"Cruel Intentions" was a highly enjoyable and modernized young adult version of the film "Dangerous Liasons". Sarah Michelle Gellar plays Kathryn, the calculating temptress who will ruin anyone's life for her own personal enjoyment. Ryan Phillippe plays Kathryn's equally evil step-brother, Sebastian.
Reese Witherspoon is Annette, the virginial innocent whom Sebastian hopes to defile and ends up falling for in the process, and Selma Blair is Cecile, the equally innocent and virginal, but not exactly intelligent, debutante whom Kathryn enjoys corrupting. Fringe's Joshua Jackson has an enjoyable cameo and there are great supporting performances from Sean Patrick Thomas, Swoosie Kurtz and Eric Mabius, to name a few.
And yes, this is the film with the highly-talked about Sarah-Selma tongue-kissing scene. There is plenty of sexual humor to entertain, even when it borders on vulgar, and the added enjoyment of the unexpectedly tender love story backdrop. This film was also the vehicle for the band The Verve's biggest hit to date, "Bittersweet Symphony".
If you haven't seen this film, you should definitely consider checking it out, especially for the incredible music described below, with numerical rating, as well as scene placements. Fair warning: There are spoilers below.
Track 1: "Every You, Every Me (Single Mix)" by Placebo--(10)--this song is simply fabulous and sets up the film perfectly. It plays over the beginning credits of the film.
Track 2: "Praise You (Radio Edit)" by Fatboy Slim--(6)--this song could get easily annoying, (especially with the lack of lyrical content), but it is tolerable. This song frames the scene where Annette and Sebastian are leaving from doing community service at the senior home.
Track 3: "Coffee & TV" by Blur--(7)--a decent song with good tempo, this song provides the background music for the infamous scene where Kathyrn teaches Cecile how to French kiss.
Track 4: "Bedroom Dancing" by Day One--(8)--a good tongue-in-cheek, danceable tune that plays after Sebastian and Cecile have sex.
Track 5: "Colorblind" by Counting Crows--(9)--a pretty piano ballad that sets the mood for Sebastian chasing after Annette and finally consummating their love.
Track 6: "Ordinary Life" by Kristen Barry--(9)--a fantastic song often cited as the favorite on the album, albeit a bit hard to understand, this folky tune plays during the pool scene with Sebastian and Annette.
Track 7: "Comin' Up From Behind" by Marcy Playground--(9)--if you liked "Sex and Candy" by Marcy Playground, then you'll love this hard rocker. This song plays when Sebastian goes to Blaine's, (Joshua Jackson), house to look for Greg.
Track 8: "Secretly" by Skunk Anansie--(7)--a lot of people don't care for this song that is featured during the end credits because it has a different sound to it. The lead singer has a whispery, high-pitched voice and there are a lot of strings featured on this track but if you like things that stray from the norm, you might like this song.
Track 9: "This Love" by Craig Armstrong feat. Elizabeth Fraser--(8)--a breezy, beautiful piano ballad that plays when Sebastian is taking a walk, lamenting over screwing it up with Annette. At the same time, Annette is reading Sebastian's diary.
Track 10: "You Could Make a Killing" by Aimee Mann--(7)--a glum, but at the same time upbeat, folk song from the former frontwoman of the band 'Til Tuesday. This song is a segway from "This Love" and also plays in the same scene.
Track 11: "Addictive" by Faithless--(7)--from this band fronted by Dido's brother who has a great, deep voice that borders on creepy comes a danceable tune that frames the scene where Cecile is in the store with her mother.
Track 12: "Trip on Love" by Abra Moore--(5)--this is probably the weakest song on the soundtrack but it does fit the scene well. It plays when Cecile sneaks over to Sebastian's house to write Ronald a love letter. Sebastian tries to make Cecile pose sexy for a picture and she is anything but sexy, which is ironic, since this is right before they have sex. Singer Moore has a babyish, cutesie voice that can grate on you but fits a Cecile scene pretty well.
Track 13: "You Blew Me Off" by Bare Jr.--(8)--plays in the background when Sebastian is talking to Blaine at Blaine's house. A good song to get angry with--it's hard, it rocks and you can scream out your aggression right along with it.
Track 14: "Bittersweet Symphony" by the Verve--(10)--this track needs no introduction. The soundtrack and film starts off on a great note with Placebo and ends on a great note with this song. Plus, it sets the climactic end scene that makes the film. Kathryn gets what she deserves and Annette drives off with her prizes, revenge rendered. The song and the scene makes for a truly excellent ending.
